First time exhibitors RITCHIE, the gas cylinder handling solutions company, was surprised to learn the extent of the cylinder handling risks that ambulance staff are still exposed to.

RITCHIE market a range of solutions for the medical gas cylinder handling and storage problems that can effect ambulance stations. Visitors to the stand described a whole range of issues including cylinder handling difficulties and no appropriate storage facilities.

Visitors stated that the increased focus on H&S risk assessments regarding the lifting of weights and the need to increase staff levels and therefore reduce absenteeism due to preventable injuries are driving the need to review handling operations.

Particularly well received was the modular secure storage system which allows the gas supply company to exchange cylinders without ambulance staff on site. The modular nature of the product also allows the use to change as priorities change; the number and type of cylinder stored can be altered without having to invest in whole new modules.

Another valuable benefit to RITCHIE was the quality of interaction between the visitors and the members of staff on the stand. A number of ideas volunteered by visitors are currently being investigated which may result in new products bolstering the already impressive range of handling and storage solutions.

"We have exhibited at a number of shows in various different markets, but the buzz generated at Ambex was very impressive," said John MacAskill, Business Development Manager for RITCHIE. "What was surprising was the obvious need for better handling and storage of gas cylinders at stations and the lack of innovative suitable products to achieve this. With the pressures on experienced, expensively trained staff it is vital that they are not exposed any unnecessary lifting risks."
